A family tax practice on Brindlee Mountain for more than six decades

What began as Rodney V. Melton’s part-time accounting work became the office Arab knows at 621 N Brindlee Mountain Parkway.  His family and staff carry it on today.[1,2]

Our story

It started with one man and a second job

Rodney V. Melton was born in Excel, Alabama, in 1930 and grew up in Mobile.  After serving in the Army during the Korean War and graduating from Spring Hill College, he spent 30 years in federal service, first at Brookley Air Force Base and then at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, in the Hellfire Project Office.[1]

All the while he kept doing accounting part-time.  That work became Rodney V. Melton & Associates, and he led and served the practice for more than 62 years, retiring at 88.  He was also a president of the Jaycees and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Arab Rotary Club.[1,2]

Rodney died in Arab on December 1, 2025, at 95.[1,2] The office he built now works as Melton Tax Services, still on Brindlee Mountain Parkway and still answering the phone with the same promise: We Work For You.[7]

  1. 1930

    Born in Excel, Alabama

    Rodney V. Melton is born on September 28, 1930, in Excel, Alabama, and grows up in Mobile.[1,2]

  2. Korean War

    Army service and college

    He serves in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and graduates from Spring Hill College.[1]

  3. Federal years

    Brookley and Redstone

    His federal career runs from Brookley Air Force Base to Redstone Arsenal, where he serves in the Hellfire Project Office.  Along the way he works part-time in accounting, and he completes 30 years of federal service.[1]

  4. The early years

    The practice takes shape

    That part-time accounting grows into Rodney V. Melton & Associates, the practice he would lead and serve for more than 62 years.[1,2]

  5. 1994

    BBB accreditation

    The office is accredited by the Better Business Bureau on June 29, 1994.[3]

  6. 2003

    Incorporated at 621 N Brindlee Mountain Parkway

    Rodney V. Melton, Inc. is registered with the Alabama Secretary of State on January 30, 2003, with its office at 621 N Brindlee Mountain Parkway in Arab.[4]

  7. At 88

    Rodney retires

    Rodney retires from the practice at the age of 88.[1,2]

  8. 2025

    Remembering Rodney

    Rodney V. Melton passes away in Arab on December 1, 2025, at 95.[1,2]

  9. 2026

    Melton Tax Services

    The office carries on as Melton Tax Services, with the same people, the same address and the same motto: We Work For You.[7]

The family behind the office

Rodney’s daughter, still at the desk

Rodney’s daughter, Tonja Melton Hollaway, is the office’s Senior Accountant, and her husband, Dewayne Hollaway, is its Electronic Filing Coordinator.[1,6] Together with the rest of the staff they keep the practice Rodney started working the way he ran it: one return, one family, one business at a time.
