My daughter started at Snead State. Is there a credit for tuition?

There may be. Colleges send Form 1098-T showing tuition paid, and education credits depend on who paid, who claims the student and the household’s income. Bring the 1098-T along with the receipts for books and required fees.

Income tax services

We moved here from Georgia in the summer. Which Alabama form do we file?

A part-year resident files Alabama Form 40 for the part of the year you lived here, and you will likely file a part-year return in the state you left as well. We handle both.^[5]

I work nights at the hospital and pick up extra shifts. How do I avoid a bill in April?

Extra shifts can throw withholding out of line, especially with a second earner in the house. Checking your pay stubs at mid-year is the easiest fix.

I sell at the Harvest Festival every year. Do I report that?

Yes. Money from selling crafts or goods is income. If you do it regularly to make a profit, it is a business, and your costs for materials and booth fees can count against it.

Snead State Community College has its main campus here; it began as Boaz Seminary more than a century ago.
