Up on Gunter Mountain

Grant sits on the Gunter Mountain plateau, with the Cathedral Caverns Highway running through town. Kate Duncan Smith DAR School, founded in 1924, is the only K-12 school the Daughters of the American Revolution own and run.^[1,2]

Cathedral Caverns State Park is a few miles away, and Grant is a stop on the World’s Longest Yard Sale each summer. Education, health care and manufacturing are the biggest sources of jobs.^[3,4]

I sell at the World’s Longest Yard Sale every year. Is that taxable?

Selling your own used belongings for less than you paid usually is not income. Buying items to resell, or making things to sell, is different: that is income, and if you do it regularly it is a business. Keep a note of what you sold and what you paid for it.

I teach at KDS. Can I deduct what I spend on my classroom?

Eligible teachers can deduct some classroom supplies they pay for themselves. Keep the receipts and bring them with your W-2.

I am thinking of opening a small business near the caverns. Where do I start?

Get your town business license, open a separate account for the business, and keep every receipt from day one. We can set up the books and, when you hire, the payroll.^[5]
