From railroad town to one of Alabama’s biggest cities

Madison was incorporated in 1869 as a railroad town and grew quickly after Redstone Arsenal opened; many residents still commute to the Arsenal and Cummings Research Park. It had 56,933 residents at the 2020 Census, and the city’s own estimate for 2024 is 64,029, which it describes as the fastest growth in Alabama.^[1,3,2]
