How to Amend a Tax Return (Form 1040-X)

Made a mistake on your taxes? Learn when to amend a return with Form 1040-X, the three-year window for refunds and what to do about your Alabama return.

The short answer

What do I do if I made a mistake on my taxes?

If you already filed and found a mistake, you generally correct it by filing an amended return on Form 1040-X.

An amended return is a second return that changes the first.  It is used to fix things like wrong income, a missed deduction or credit, a wrong filing status or dependents that were reported incorrectly.  It is a routine process, and many people do it.

Do not panic and do not ignore the mistake.  Fixing it yourself is generally better than waiting for the IRS to find it, because interest can keep building on tax that is owed.

When to amend

When do I need to file an amended return?

You amend when the return you filed contains information that is wrong or incomplete in a way that changes your tax.

You do not need to amend for a simple math error, because the IRS generally corrects those itself.  Nor do you amend just because you forgot to attach a form; the IRS will normally write to you for it.  But you should amend for changed income, deductions, credits or filing status.

If your return was never accepted at all, that is a different matter.  Read about an e-file rejection, because a rejected return is corrected and resubmitted rather than amended.

  • You left off income, such as a late W-2 or 1099
  • You missed a deduction or credit you were entitled to
  • You used the wrong filing status
  • You claimed or missed a dependent
  • A corrected form arrived after you filed, such as a W-2c (see missing or incorrect W-2)

Time limits

How long do I have to amend a tax return?

You generally have three years from the date you filed the original return to claim a refund by amending.

If you owe more tax, you should amend as soon as you find out, because interest and penalties can continue to build.  If you are due a refund, the three-year window is a firm limit, and waiting past it can mean losing the refund.  There are limited exceptions, so ask if you are near the edge.

Amended returns are processed more slowly than original returns, and many are still filed on paper.  Expect to wait, and do not file a second amendment just because it has been a while.

Alabama

Do I also have to amend my Alabama return?

Often yes, because Alabama lets you deduct federal income tax paid and its return starts from your federal figures.

Alabama returns can be amended, and a federal amendment frequently changes the Alabama return as well.  If your federal amendment changes your income or your federal tax, the state return may need to change too.  It is easy to forget, so we always check.

For the basics of the state return, see how to file taxes in Alabama.

After amending

What happens after I file Form 1040-X?

The IRS reviews the amended return, sends a refund or a bill, or writes to ask for more information.

You can track an amended return with the IRS, and processing can take a long time.  If a letter arrives, do not ignore it, keep a copy and respond by the deadline.  Our page on what to do when you get an IRS notice helps.

Answers

Questions about amend a return

Will amending my return trigger an audit?

Amending is a normal part of the tax system.  An amended return is reviewed, but filing one does not by itself mean an audit.  Accuracy is what matters.

Can I e-file an amended return?

Some amended returns can be filed electronically, and others must be on paper.  The rules depend on the year and the form, so we check when preparing it.

Should I wait for my original refund before amending?

Generally yes.  Wait until the original return is processed, then file the amendment.  Do not cash a refund and ignore the need to fix a mistake.

How long does an amended return take?

Much longer than an original return, and the IRS posts its own estimate.  We cannot promise a date.

What if I owe more after amending?

Pay as soon as you can, because interest continues until the balance is paid.  If you cannot pay, do not ignore it.  See our guide on owing taxes and not being able to pay.
